Yield-Based Removal Scripts
What are yield-based removal scripts?
A yield-based removal script is an approach that tailors fertility application rates based on the amount of nutrients removed from the soil during the previous crop season. When a crop grows, it “removes” nutrients from the soil as part of the harvest (e.g., nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium). These nutrients need to be replenished to maintain soil fertility and ensure good yields in the next crop season. A yield-based removal script calculates exactly how much of each nutrient was likely removed in different parts of a field based on the yield recorded there.
Example: Every bushel of corn removes ~0.4 lbs of P2O5 (Phosphorus). If a specific zone yielded 200 bushels, that implies 80 lbs P2O5 per acre were removed, which would require ~160 lbs MAP (Monoammonium Phosphate) to replace the phosphorus for that zone.
How will you get the sub-field data?
Ideally, we can collect cleaned yield files from the farmer’s combine to generate these prescriptions. They can connect their accounts like FieldView or My John Deere to make this easy and automatic. In cases where we don’t have field specific yield files, we can estimate sub-field yield variability based on satellite imagery. Combined with a county estimate or grower estimate of field level yield, we can generate sub- field yield with a high degree of accuracy
What is the expected output?
The target output will be a sub-field yield file for Phosphorus and Potassium applications that will replace the amount of fertilizer taken off with the last year’s crop.
